Cookie and Fondant Paint Recipe

As I’ve worked on cakes and cookies over the years, I’ve had many instances where painting on cookies or pieces of fondant makes so much more sense than making 6 bags of different colored icings, or piping tiny details.

I quickly got sick of attempting to paint directly with food dye, which can easily end up way too dark, and is difficult to control. So I experimented over the years and developed this simple recipe that works much more like an actual paint!

Here is a basic side-by-side comparison of painting with dye and painting with cookie paint.
  • The dye colors bleed into each other. The cookie paint has clear, crisp lines.
  • Dye can only be painted on a white background; dye painted over other colors will not show up properly. Cookie paint shows up perfectly when painted over other dried colors.
  • Lighter, pastel colors are difficult to make with dye, but easy to make with cookie paint.
  • Brush strokes show up with cookie paint, making it great for fine details and stylization.
Just like with real paint, this can be used by all levels of skill, for all kinds of results! Wherever you’re at with your painting skills, I guarantee you can find some use for this recipe in your cake or cookie decorating.

Best Uses for Cookie Paint

One of the best uses for cookie paint is for cookies with a huge variety of colors that you don’t want to make bags for. Like these tie-dye cookies, which I have made painstakingly in the past by flooding each color, and it was just not worth it!

I use it frequently for colors, textures, shading, and detail on fondant cake toppers.

That's not just good lighting making that flower pop. The insides of the petals were painted slightly darker and the tips were painted pastel.

I used the paint to add details and texture to these adorable planets!

If you are a skilled artist, it is also fantastic for highly detailed cookies or fondant pieces. You can get so much more detail with a tiny brush than with a tiny decorating tip!

This is also an excellent option for decorating cookies with kids!
I recently had my niece and nephew over and was able to entertain them very easily by handing them a few plain white cookies, pre-mixed paints, brushes, water, and paper towels.
Here is my niece with her "cherry pie" cookie.
